As a nurse, and as a mom of a toddler, I’ve pretty much accepted that “healthy” is a relative term. Toddlers are tiny germ factories—they sneeze on you, cough in your face, and share snacks with questionable hygiene. So yes, I came down with a cold. Sniffles, watery eyes, the usual. Nothing dramatic.
But here’s the thing: I still went to work. Because let’s be real—if I took time off for every little bug my toddler brought home, I’d basically be on permanent leave. Nurses and Leaders don’t get that luxury.
So imagine my surprise when someone (and no, I won’t say who, because they might just read this) insisted that I take a COVID test. COVID? For the sniffles? Really?

When Common Sense Gets Cloudy
I get it. We all lived through a terrifying pandemic. It changed the way we see illness forever. Masks, swabs, endless hand sanitizer—we’ve still got battle scars. And yes, for a time, every sneeze could have meant something bigger. But folks, it’s 2025. We’re not in 2020 anymore.
There’s a big difference between being cautious and being paranoid. Not every runny nose needs a test. Sometimes, it’s just the common cold doing what it’s always done—circulating through households, daycares, and workplaces like it owns the place.
Nurses Don’t Call in for Sniffles
Maybe this is part of nurse culture, but if we all stayed home every time we had a tickle in our throat, hospitals would shut down. Patients need us. Families count on us. And let’s be honest—nurses are some of the toughest people around. We power through aches, colds, and exhaustion because that’s what the job demands.
I’m not saying we should ignore real symptoms or put people at risk. But we also need to stop treating every sniffle like a four-alarm fire.
Time to Start Living Again
The pandemic was serious. Lives were lost. Lessons were learned. Part of healing as a society means finding balance again. It’s time to stop letting fear rule every little cough or sneeze.
Sometimes, a cold is just a cold. And sometimes, a mom with a toddler is just tired of swabbing her nose for the fifteenth time this decade.
So no, I didn’t need a COVID test this week. What I needed was tissues, DayQuil, and a reminder that life—sniffles and all—has to go on.
