Is Nursing a Calling? Or Just the Best Damn Job I Ever Chose?

When people ask why someone becomes a nurse, the answer is almost always the same:
“I just want to help people.”

And while that’s beautiful… it’s also vague.

The guy at the drive-thru helps people get fed.
The cashier at the bank helps people manage their money.
Your hairstylist helps you feel like your best self (shoutout to them, by the way).

But nursing? Nursing is more.

We help people in their most vulnerable, unfiltered, often traumatic moments — and we do it with skill, compassion, and a whole lot of caffeine.

So why did I become a nurse?

Sure, I had a million reasons floating around when I started. Job security. A love for terminology. Curiosity. Maybe even a little chaos.

But the real reason?
I wanted to be someone my kids could be proud of.

I wanted them to see me show up, push through, and make a difference — not just in the world, but right in our own little corner of it.

I added “Nurse” to my growing list of titles — right next to Daughter, Wife, Mom, Mimi, and eventually… Boss.

And you know what? Every one of those titles matters. But “Nurse”?
That one gave me the power to change lives.

So is nursing a calling?
Maybe.
Or maybe it’s just the kind of work that calls you to be more — every single shift.
